There is a gift, as a pastor, in stepping away from work for a vacation other than just the time to rest, travel, and experience a different culture. It also gives me the opportunity to reflect about The Downtown Church and the people who have chosen to call it their church family. No matter where I am when Sunday rolls around, I am looking at my watch and thinking about the people gathering on the corner of Walnut and Jefferson.
I don’t worry about what will happen in my absence, I know you all have got this. Brent, Heather, Brian and the rest of our hospitality team, tech team, and band will make sure that we welcome all and Jesus Christ is worshiped well. It’s more that I am curious. Who will be with you? What new people will give us the opportunity to welcome them and offer them the love of Christ? Which of the many adorable children is Ronn going to have to bring the offering forward? What is the family in charge of the children’s moment going to have prepared? And of course, what unexpected thing will happen that will bring laughter and remind us of the joy we have at The Downtown Church?
I am grateful for the technology that keeps us connected even when I am away. Because of the time difference while I was traveling, I watched the service at my leisure. I love that I was able to replay the children’s moment over and again ( the Baker and Springer kids are wonderful). Austin’s voice brought tears to my eyes. Heather and Brent spoke words I needed to hear. But what I miss most is the energy in the room. The way in which the Holy Spirit moves and breathes in our sanctuary. The stirring of uncomfortable babies and the stampeding of children running to get upstairs with Carla for their time of learning. Watching the band lead us well as a huge choir singing praises to God together.
This Friday, August 4, because of the heat, we are moving our First Friday Art Walk Party inside, and I hope you will invite your friends and family to come. It will be a great opportunity to introduce them to the wonder of a loving community that offers love and acceptance. Wherever you may be, I look forward to seeing you Sunday too. Join us online or if you are able, come and bring your spirit to mingle and interact with us and the Holy Spirit in our historic, beautiful sanctuary.
Thank you for the time away. There is no place like home.
See you Sunday, Lori
