Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

We are busy tying up all the loose ends and making plans for a magical Christmas Eve around here. The place has been decorated for weeks, but it is starting to feel real now. We are only a few days away from this special celebration! We have retooled a few things in our usual service and I don't want anyone to be caught off guard, so hopefully this helps.

There will be organ music before service and cookies, coffee, and hot chocolate ready at 6:30pm. When families arrive, kids can get their costumes on for the pageant, but then stay with their families. We will dismiss the kids to the correct starting points at the beginning of the first hymn. That way kids will know exactly where their family is sitting after the pageant.

After the pageant, service will continue with music, a message, Holy Communion, and we will end the service by singing Silent Night to candlelight. We promise it's the perfect end to such a beautiful evening (and we even have a few battery powered candles for our littlest members).

The most important thing to remember about Christmas Eve is that the hope, love, joy, and peace that made Advent and Christmas so amazing are meant to be spread out the whole year too. So continue being generous after the candles go out and the presents are unwrapped. This world needs people powered by the spirit of the Christmas Season all year long.

See you Sunday,
Brian

Christmas Eve is only FIVE DAYS AWAY! We can't wait to worship together as we celebrate the birth of Jesus in a manger, tucked away in a stable, in the little town of Bethlehem. The service begins at 7pm and it will have all your favorite things: a chaotic, no-rehearsal children's pageant, beautiful Christmas music, and Silent Night sung by the light of candles. Come early for beautiful, pre-service organ music, hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies starting at 6:30pm.
It's been our tradition that all the gifts and offerings that come in at our Christmas Eve service are then spent beyond our walls. This year, half of the money will be sent on to Council of Churches for the important work they do in our community through the ministries of Crosslines, Safe to Sleep, and the Diaper Bank, among others. The other half will be set aside in our Benevolence Fund to help people in our church and people in our community. You can give this Sunday or Christmas Eve in one of the colored envelopes in the bulletin, or online via our secure giving portal – just click here – and select 2024 Christmas Eve Offering.

In January, we will be starting a new series called From the Foundry: The Words, Ways, and Whys of our Faith. We will be spending a couple of months diving into the history, theology, music, spaces, and words that give United Methodist Churches a distinctly Wesleyan foundation. Near the end of the series, we will celebrate with a special Sunday of worship at the Springfield Little Theatre! Come and join us as we uncover our roots and explore our future.
