I must admit, I'm ready for Christmas. The church is decorated, my house is decorated, the city is glowing in the greens and reds of the season. But Christmas isn't quite yet and I don't want to hurry past these remaining three weeks of Advent.
I talked about it last week in the sermon, but one of the true gifts of this season is the reminder to give the time of waiting some space too. I need to remove myself from the hustle and bustle, and spend a few moments paying attention to this season of longing, of waiting expectantly.
Maybe that's making more space for our Advent calendar at home. Or setting time aside to join others at The Downtown Church in the short devotions we gave out. Perhaps it is simply to enjoy the cute pets appearing in my social media feeds every day from people in our congregation. Whatever it is, I need to slow down. Because we have a tendency to speed things up. Christmas will be here soon enough. Savor these weeks of anticipation as a gift. And then, on Christmas Eve, we will gather and celebrate.
I hope you are making plans to join us for a special night of worship and celebration. Our Christmas Eve worship will be at 7pm with hymns, prayers, communion, and candlelight. And the always interesting, no-rehearsal kids pageant will be as chaotic and beautiful as ever.
See you Sunday, Brian
