There is a Christmas song that really resonates with me this year. It comes from the musical Mame Written by Jerry Herman entitled We Need a Little Christmas. The words that keep rolling around in my head are these:
For I've grown a little leaner, grown a little colder Grown a little sadder, grown a little older And I need a little angel sitting on my shoulder Need a little Christmas now For we need a little music, need a little laughter Need a little singing ringing through the rafter And we need a little snappy, happy ever after We need a little Christmas now
The events of the world swirling around us this season are impossible to ignore. The devastating effects of war, the gun violence across America, the growing population of unsheltered people, the increase in suicides among young people. You name it. As the days become shorter and the darkness encroaches we need a little Christmas now.
Now. And God in faithfulness and glory comes. Each day I step into our beautifully adorned sanctuary and remember the wonder of God incarnate in Jesus Christ. Each Sunday as we light another Advent candle we are saying that darkness does not win, love does. We need a little Christmas, now. Put on the Christmas music, watch Elf for the millionth time, laugh, sing, dance. Join us in worship and remember the candles of hope, love, joy, and peace are the gifts of Jesus we need, and they are here.
See you Sunday, Lori
