When Brian preached the message this past week, he kindly reminded you all that I am on Medicare and approaching the age of, well, that’s not important. Brian can get away with that. He has worked with me for more than eight years and has earned the right to pick on me. And his point was important. It is not any single person who will continue to move our church forward to grow the kingdom of God, it will take all of us.
Throughout the month of January we have been talking about the future of The Downtown Church and using the metaphor of a flywheel. Brian used this definition Sunday: In short, the purpose of a flywheel in an engine is to store rotational energy to smooth out the intermittent power pulses, and to overcome the compression resistance of the pistons. Now, I still don't understand all of that, but what I do know is that if we are pushing together, leaning in with our determination to make a difference in our community and the world, we will do so. Our combined energy, the unique gift each person brings to this body of Christ, will smooth out the road ahead and overcome the resistance we will face as we set about loving God and our neighbor.
Our flywheel begins with Welcome Everyone and then moves through the steps. Take a moment to look at this diagram once again.
Around and around we will go forward, becoming the place where Christ and the Community intersect. As always, if you have any comments or questions to share, I would be delighted to spend time with you.
See you Sunday, Lori
