News From the Pews - February 20, 2025

Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

We are doing something very different this Sunday for worship. Something that hasn't been done here since 2014. We are having a choir help lead us in worship along with our wonderful (sometimes finicky) pipe organ.

We've been calling it High Church Sunday, and while that sounds a little stuffy, we promise the church and the people are still the same. But this Sunday we are talking about music in worship, so we thought it would be fun to lean into that history and celebrate one of our founders, Charles Wesley, and a few of his great hymns.

The choir will be made up of the Springfield Chamber Chorus, University Heights Baptist Church, and you, the congregation of The Downtown Church. If I'm being honest, I'm a little nervous. High church and traditional worship aren't familiar to me. That's why I'm glad I'm a Methodist, a denomination that celebrates God's grace loudly. Let's lift our voices loudly this Sunday, and if I trip over my robe, show me a little extra grace!

After High Church Sunday, come back that evening for the youth group's CHILINGO fundraiser. What is Chilingo, you ask? It's a chili cook-off and bingo rolled into one! All the funds raised will help the youth go to the UNITE Summer Conference. And who knows...maybe you'll win at bingo or take home the blue ribbon for the best chili at The Downtown Church! Signups are now LIVE on Sundays for Dinners Together. Find the group that fits for your calendar and make plans to enjoy a great meal and even better company. What are Dinners Together? They are just that—dinners together. That's it. No agenda. No tracts. No Bible study. Just a chance to enjoy dinner with the people you see on Sunday mornings. You can signup on Sundays in the main hallway or email us back and we can put your name on one of the lists.

Mark your calendars for one of our favorite Sundays of the year! We are taking this circus on the road, but just a short walk down to Springfield Little Theatre on March 2nd. We are so lucky to have wonderfully generous neighbors who let us invade their historic theatre every year to hold community worship in their space. This worship experiences is always a ton of fun, so make plans to join us and bring your friends and family with you!
