I just finished a phone call with a person from the Missouri Annual Conference staff. She was seeking to know how The Downtown Church was engaged in working in the areas of racial and social justice and how the conference might provide resources to enhance our work. She was given our congregation’s name as a place that was actively participating in justice ministries. How are we going about creating a more just world?
I answered by describing the ways The Downtown Church is living into its vision to be a place where Christ and the community intersect; sometimes in our building and sometimes in the community. In the church, we are opening our doors to organizations that are on the frontlines of impacting poverty, addictions, child abuse and domestic violence. We are stepping out of the building on First Fridays to get to know our neighbors and extending hospitality to all who might pass by. In the community, we are serving at Crosslines, Rare Breed and growing our relationship with McGregor Elementary.
When I finished the conversation, I thought, I need to share this with you all. You are The Downtown Church and you are creating the bridge that brings Christ to the community and the community to Christ. Together, we are making our small part of the world a more just place. Is there more to do? Always. But for a moment I invite you to pause and recognize the good God is doing through you. And I am grateful.
Blessings, Lori
