When I began writing News from the Pews many years ago, it was with the instructions from Brian to “just write what you are thinking about.” Today, it would take writing a short story to do that. Let me share a few of my thoughts:

  • I am thinking about the historic General Conference of the UMC I experienced last week that removed harmful language and truly opened the doors of our denomination. You are welcome to join me Sunday morning at 9am to learn more or Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. Tuesday, Rev. Kim Jenne—a delegate and the Director of Connectional Ministries for the Missouri Annual Conference—will join me to present to our district.

  • I am thinking about the leadership team, both lay and clergy, that will continue the vision of The Downtown Church long after I retire. Pastor Brian Mattson is the right person to be lead pastor. Heather Blair and Brent Bossi coming on staff will bring great skills and passion. Maddie Mackey is already bringing her voice and gifts to help lead worship and connect us to the heart of God. Keith Owens is incredibly and gracefully supporting our work here in many ways you may never see but would know if they didn’t happen. Carla Pate and Cody Williams are guiding our Children and Youth forward in faith.

  • I am thinking about the myriad of volunteers who keep The Downtown Church sailing within the church and into the community. Ronn, Ingrid, Diane, Jim, Caralyn, Jeff, Julie, Wade, Linda and a host of others. They have caught the vision of our church and are committed to living into it within and without the building.

  • I am thinking about the 10 homes that were opened to host our Spring 2024 Dinners Together. 95 people of all ages participated simply to break bread together and build relationships. Amazing!

And I am thinking about you. You who are taking the time to read my thoughts. It is an honor I don’t take lightly. In the hustle and bustle of your life you have invited me in. Thank you.

See you Sunday,
Lori

The General Conference of the United Methodist Church is over and quite a bit happened. Lori will discuss all the changes this Sunday morning at 9am in the basement. If you can't make it then, at 6:30pm on Tuesday, Lori and Rev. Kim Jenne will talk about the changes and answer any questions in our sanctuary.
We had sooooo much fun last year, we decided to do it again. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us on Wednesday, June 12, for Family Fun Night at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park. There will be animals, hayrides, food, bounce houses, and games. Let us know if you can make it and RSVP right here!

Next month is another First Friday Art Walk Party! Join us on June 7 for live jazz from the Springfield Community Jazz Ensemble, popcorn + lemonade, and fun kids activities. And probably a popsicle or three. Bring your friends and neighbors and enjoy a beautiful evening in Downtown Springfield!
