The past few weeks I have been in conversation with people new to the story of The Downtown Church. It is a wonderful tale of how we started in 2014 with a vision team composed of people from the community and the church to learn from the Holy Spirit who this particular body of Christ is called to be. The group consisted of an architect who cares greatly about Springfield, the director of the Downtown Springfield Association, a person who became very disillusioned with organized religion, someone who describes themselves as an agnostic, a young person who worked with college students, as well as a few people who decided this was their home church. We met weekly for a few months to dream and think.
It was a beautiful process. When we finally landed on the vision statement it felt as if the light came on in a dark room. This was it. This was the church we wanted to be. This is the way we could impact our community. This is how we could grow the kingdom of God. And as I recount the story, I am very aware that these words still guide us: The Downtown Church meets in the middle of rich & poor, young & old, believers & nonbelievers. A place where Christ and the community intersect.
This Sunday we invite you who call The Downtown Church your home to make a pledge to our budget for 2023. This is how we are able to make good financial decisions for living into our vision. And I can already say thank you! You are The Downtown Church and I am grateful for how we continue to honor Christ by being the place where Christ and the community intersect.
See you on Sunday for Bluegrass music! Lori
