I know it’s early to be waxing nostalgic about the past year, but as I began to plan for the rest of 2021 I was amazed to note something extraordinary about The Downtown Church. Since the pandemic began in 2020 and by the end of this year, we will have had ten different voices bringing the message in worship. Only two were pastors (Jeff Johnson and myself). We have had 20 different families put together children’s moments that have helped us all stay connected and experience creative ways of sharing Holy Scripture through the eyes of a child.
This month has been extraordinary as well. We have seen the restart of The Downtown Kids with Carla Pate, a Bible Study with Jim Millsap on Sunday mornings, and The Downtown Youth with Cody Williams on Sunday evenings. As I write this Ronn, Julie, and Claire are busily contacting people and inviting them to be greeters in October.
Extraordinary in that so many have said “yes” when asked. Extraordinary in that you have given me the opportunity to be where I have needed to be for my family, health, and rest with grace. Extraordinary in the gifts you have brought to bear. Extraordinary in the number of people in this church engaged in helping all of us live out our faith in Jesus Christ, both in person and online.
I don't have any great conclusions to draw from all this today. I’ll leave it to you to think about what it means for you to be part of an extraordinary church family. For me, I’m just extraordinarily grateful.
See you Sunday, online or in person, Lori
