Disconnection is rampant around us. Politics. Religion. Covid. Busy-ness. There is no shortage of dividing points. But, are we disconnected because of these divisions, or do the divisions have such sway because we were already disconnected? In his book, Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam presents his extensive research on "social capital"—the array of connections we have to other people.

Inspired by Putnam's work and conclusions, we're examining our social connections in the context of the Church. How does God mean for us to be connected? What might be possible when we're connected? What opportunities might we be missing to be a force for positive change in the face of our fractured world?

We're exploring these questions and more beginning August 18th, with our new sermon series No One Is An Island. Several different discussion groups (Sundays at 9:00 AM & at 5:30 PM, Wednesdays at 10:00 AM & at 6:30 PM) will offer opportunities to meet and talk about why it's so important to connect and engage with our neighbors.

The Downtown Church is also hosting three screenings of a documentary, Join or Die, centered around the work of Putnam, in cooperation with The Moxie on August 25th and 26th. The screenings will be free & open to the public (although seating will be limited). We hope that you will join us, both for the movie and for discussion, and that you will also invite folks you know to further spread a message of kindness and grace throughout our community.
